The Templeton World Charity Foundation joins cOAlition S

01/10/2020

The cOAlition S organisations are pleased to announce that the Templeton World Charity Foundation (TWCF) has joined cOAlition S, and as such is committed to supporting Plan S principles and working towards accelerating full and immediate Open Access.

Since 1996, the Templeton World Charity Foundation has served as a global philanthropic catalyst for discoveries about big questions of the universe in areas at the intersection of science, philosophy, and society. Today, TWCF has announced a bold Open Access Policy that is aligned with Plan S and requires that whoever makes use of the Foundation’s research dollars must make their final paper openly accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Additionally, the TWCF launched a Research Assessment Policy, which seeks to increase fairness and scientific rigor, putting value on the quality of data, code and methodologies produced by the researcher rather than the impact factor of journals.

Johan Rooryck, Executive Director of cOAlition S, welcomed this news, commenting: “cOAlition S is focused on delivering full and immediate Open Access. To achieve that goal, we need a global alliance of research funding and performing organisations, and I am delighted that the TWCF is helping us fulfil this ambition”.

While the membership of cOAlition S continues to grow, the preparations for the implementation of Plan S are underway. Significant work is carried out to operationalise the latest policy developments (Rights Retention Strategy, Price and Service Transparency Frameworks, Transformative Journals) and the launch of the Journal Checker Tool, which is expected to be available before the end of the year.
