DIAMAS project releases Diamond Open Access Recommendations and Guidelines

02/06/2025

The Diamond Open Access Recommendations and Guidelines aim to support the Diamond Open Access model and help build a more resilient scholarly publication ecosystem.

The DIAMAS (Developing Institutional Open Access Publishing Models to Advance Scholarly Communication) project has released a framework of actionable Diamond Open Access (OA) Recommendations and Guidelines tailored to the needs of institutions, funders, sponsors, donors, and policymakers. Designed to support and strengthen the Diamond OA model, an academic-led academic publication model without fees for either authors or readers, the framework has been developed in close collaboration with policymakers and representatives from institutions and research funding organisations.

The Diamond OA Recommendations and Guidelines aim to improve the resilience of the scholarly publications ecosystem: As a non-profit publication model that puts the scholarly community and academic integrity at the centre, Diamond OA is particularly suited to strengthen the independence of academic publishers, editors and authors in the face of the rising number of threats to academic freedom. Johan Rooryck, co-coordinator of the DIAMAS project, explains:

“By design, Diamond OA is not for sale. The model draws strength from the diverse actors and communities involved, preventing overdependence on a single source of funding or support. This makes Diamond OA more resilient and less vulnerable to takeovers by financial actors hostile to Open Science. We strongly believe that with this set of Diamond OA Recommendations and Guidelines, we can help build up the currently much-needed resilience of the scholarly communication system, precisely because of the model’s flexibility and adaptability.”

The Diamond OA Recommendations and Guidelines are available through the DIAMAS project and the European Diamond Capacity Hub, a collective that provides services for Diamond Open Access Publishers, Service Providers, and Tools & Technology Providers.
