cOAlition S Seeks an Open Access Champion

08/04/2019

Plan S is an initiative for Open Access publishing, launched in September 2018 and supported by cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funders.

Plan S requires that, from 2020, scientific publications that result from research funded by public grants must be published in compliant Open Access journals or platforms.

To take forward this work – and help to change the global publishing system and ensure that research is no longer hidden behind subscription paywalls – cOAlition S is seeking to appoint an Open Access Champion.

Objectives, Experience, and Skills

Working on behalf of cOAlition S, the key objectives of the Open Access Champion are to:

  • promote, present and communicate Plan S and thus help to accelerate the transition to full and immediate Open Access
  • represent cOAlition S in meetings with key stakeholders including funders, publishers, learned societies, representatives of academic institutions, and researchers

We are seeking someone who has significant experience in a leadership role and proven experience in efficient networking with a variety of stakeholders in science and science policy. A good understanding of the international research funding arena is also a key requirement.

The successful applicant will be an excellent communicator and have demonstrable influencing and relation-management skills. They will also be well-connected (at a global level), proactive, highly motivated, and passionate about Open Access and, more generally, open research.

The Open Access Champion will work in an autonomous way but will ensure that the members of cOAlition S are informed on a regular basis and will report to the Chair of the cOAlition S Leaders Group.

The Role

We anticipate that the role will require a commitment of between two and three days a week.

The initial contract will be for a 12-month period, with opportunity for renewal.

Next Steps

If you have the skills outlined above and have a real passion for helping bring about a revolution in the way research publications are made available then we’d love to hear from you. Please email your CV, along with a cover letter setting out how you meet the above requirements, to: robert.kiley@coalition-s.org
