This membership naturally fits with the aims and scope of cOAlition S. Specifically, the Plan S Guidance states that research should be assessed on its own merits rather than on the basis of the venue in which the research is published. Principle 10 of Plan S makes this more explicit: “The Funders commit that when assessing research outputs during funding decisions they will value the intrinsic merit of the work and not consider the publication channel, its impact factor (or other journal metrics), or the publisher.”
Within the broader context of CoARA, cOAlition S will focus on the role of scholarly publishing in the reform of research assessment, and contribute to discussions about all levels of the scholarly publication cycle, including:
In cooperation with CoARA members, cOAlition S will also discuss more equitable, scholar-driven, and scholar-owned solutions to academic publishing, as well as innovative publishing models like peer-reviewed preprints.
